About Wombat State Forest

Wombat State Forest covers over 70,000 hectares of primarily native forests in central Victoria, Australia, lying roughly 90 kilometers west of Melbourne. Characterized by its ancient volcanic plains, deep valleys, and rich soils, the forest supports diverse ecosystems dominated by mixed eucalypt species including messmate stringybark, peppermint gums, and manna gums. The forest has historical significance as it was home to several gold mining towns in the 19th century; relics of mining activity such as old shafts and equipment can still be found, adding cultural interest alongside natural appeal. Recreational opportunities abound with a developed network of walking and horse riding trails, extensive mountain biking routes such as those at Lysterfield and nearby trails, and several camping spots. Wildlife enthusiasts can observe species like the common wombat, koalas, echidnas, and various birdlife such as powerful owls and pardalotes. Notable landmarks include the Hanging Rock Reserve to the north, which is famous for its unusual rock formations and cultural significance, as well as Cascade Creek with its series of waterfalls. The forest’s combination of accessible wilderness, scenic landscapes, and proximity to urban centers makes it a popular destination for nature lovers, outdoor sports enthusiasts, and history buffs. Management focuses on balancing recreational use with conservation, preserving the forest’s biodiversity while providing quality visitor experiences.
